Gibb River Road 1 - El Questro

Welcome to the Gibb River Road - 700km of dirt road crossing through the spectacular scenery of the Kimberleys in WA linking the huge cattle stations to the outside world! 4WD definitely required and a sense of adventure....what an incredible week in an amazing region. There were river crossings, unseasonal rainfalls, bits falling off the car, flooded car engines, mud slides, snake bites (not our family) and what Vinter holiday would be complete without a trip to the hospital!!! Let the adventure begin...

We set off on the Gibb River Road with a sense of anticipation and trepidation - would we really need the 2 spare wheels as suggested, 20 litres of water per person and enough food to last an extra 4 days in case we got stuck somewhere? Finally we may be able to use some of the tinned food we have been lugging around since our visit to Woolies at Northbridge Plaza!!! Satellite phone charged and ready we headed off to El Questro Wilderness Park the first major stop on the road heading west. All the sections of the road were open and we were ready for adventure. This section of the road had recently been graded and was fantastic - easy driving and just a few small creek crossings - so far so good.

El Questro was great - so beautiful and tranquil with a great campsite right on the river. A welcome relief after spending the last couple of days in a van park! So much to see and do but we spent a lot of time actually just relaxing and swimming in the waterhole.

The boys loved fishing for barra in the river - not a single bite let alone a fish but the boys had a great time wading through the river casting their lines and keeping a watch out for crocs!

We did the walk to Emma Gorge - absolutely spectacular and well worth the hour of rock scrambling in the sun to get there. Beautiful big waterhole with waterfall surrounded by sheer cliffs. Poor little Will's legs are not quite long enough yet so fortunately for him we have the backpack which is killing Michael but making all the walks possible.
